KATHMANDU, Jan 10: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is preparing to appoint Karin Landgren of Sweden, currently the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal, as his "Representative" in Nepal and head of UNMIN.

According to UN sources, Ban will soon notify the UN Security Council about his intention to appoint Landgren, who has many years of political, managerial and international law experience with the UN, as his representative in Nepal, following the near departure of Ian Martin, who currently heads UNMIN as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General.
Landgren has undertaken UN assignments in Eritrea, Singapore, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, the Philippines and the Great Lakes region of Africa in various capacities, according to the UNMIN website. "She is an adjunct professor at Columbia University´s School of International and Public Affairs, and has published and lectured widely on humanitarian, refugee and child protection issues."
After further UNMIN downsizing, it will be headed by the Representative (not Special Representative, which is the case until January 22) of the Secretary-General.
