KATHMANDU, July 31: Lalbir Chaudhary has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), replacing Ranjita Shrestha. The decision was made during a national gathering held on Wednesday by the faction led by NUP patron Resham Chaudhary.
Lalbir is the father of Resham Chaudhary. The gathering ousted Ranjita from her position and chose Lalbir as her successor.

Following his appointment, Lalbir stated that he is committed to steering the party forward in line with its statute and internal procedures. He urged Ranjita Shrestha to express her views within the party and emphasized the need for resolution through internal dialogue.
He accused Ranjita of not convening any party meetings for the past 18 months, which, according to him, had stalled party activities. Lalbir added that the national gathering aimed to provide a way forward and that he would proceed in consultation with the party committee.
