KATHMANDU, June 26: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayankaji Shrestha has said that the Kuwait government plans to hire an additional 200,000 workers from Nepal.

Foreign Minister Shrestha said so during a media briefing at the Tribhuvan International Airport, following his return from the 19th Foreign Ministerial level meeting of Asia's Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) in Tehran, Iran, on Tuesday.

According to Shrestha, Kuwait's Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya conveyed in Tehran that Kuwait aims to increase the number of Nepali workers from the current 100,000 to 300,000. Furthermore, Kuwait will open an embassy in Kathmandu this year.

During his visit, Foreign Minister Shrestha held bilateral meetings with Iran's Acting Foreign Minister, Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Kuwait's Foreign Minister, Saudi Arabia's Deputy Foreign Minister, and Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister. These meetings focused on mutual cooperation and interests.

Shrestha also discussed the repatriation of Nepali soldiers in the Russian army with Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister. While Russia has agreed to send Nepali citizens back, the procedures are still being finalized. He noted that there is no definitive data on the number of Nepalis killed or injured in the Ukraine war while serving in the Russian army. Compensation arrangements have begun for seven Nepalis who lost their lives after joining the Russian army in the Ukraine conflict.
