Korean and Nepali missing in avalanche at Dhaulagiri Base Camp

POKHARA, Oct 10: A Korean tourist and his Nepali companion who had gone on a trek to Dhaulagiri base camp are missing following an avalanche in the area.

The two have gone missing after the avalanche at the base camp in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-4 of Myagdi. Locals said that they got lost in the avalanche three days ago.

According to Prem Prasad Pun, chairman of Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, two of those who went on a trek to Dhaulagiri base camp were caught in an avalanche. He said that two other Koreans and their four Nepali companions have been rescued.

Similarly, Hari Prasad Tilija, a businessman who runs a hotel in the Italian camp of the Dhaulagiri base camp, also said that a Korean and his Nepali companion had gone missing in an avalanche. "Three Koreans, two others were rescued by a helicopter," he said. The information was disseminated late due to snowfall and communication breakdown. Three Indians and their six Nepali helpers returned from the Italian camp after they could not climb further due to the snowfall, according to Tilija.

“This happened three days ago. However, the information was disseminated late due to the lack of contact, said Milan Tiwari, secretary of Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), Gandaki Chapter. According to him, the climbing team is at the base camp. "There is a Japanese camp between the Italian camp and the Dhaulagiri Base Camp. It is not even possible to reach there. It is assumed that others are also trapped," he said, “However, there is no information about the trapped people.”
