Koju wins 5,000m

KATHMANDU, July 25: Kanchhi Maya Koju of the Armed Police Force secured first position in women´s 5,000m race on Sunday during the preliminary selection of athletics for the 16th Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou.







Koju clocked 17 minutes 26 seconds finishing ahead of her colleague Gita Khatri who finished the race in 18 minutes 36 seconds to secure second position. [break]



Under men´s same category, Nepal Army runners took both first and second positions. Kalyan Baniya secured first position finishing the race in 15 minutes 18.03 seconds while Jeet Bahadur Dhami completed the race in 15 minutes 31.30 seconds to finish second.



In women´s 200m race, Sabitri Nepali of Nepal Police clinched the top spot to disappoint Pramila Rijal of APF, who represented Nepal in the 11th South Asian Games and took gold in the Fifth National Games as well. Nepali finished the race in 26.64 seconds while Rijal completed it in 27.09 seconds.



In men´s 200m race, Min Bahadur Chaudhary of Nepal Army clocked 23.22 seconds to finish in top position while his colleague Jaguram Chaudhary clocked 23.53 seconds to claim the second spot.







In 110m men´s hurdles, Dhirendra Chaudhary of Nepal Police bagged first position finishing the race in 15.73 seconds while Santosh Shrestha of APF finished second with a timing of 16.20 seconds.



In women´s triple jump, Keshari Chaudhary leaped 11.11m to secured first place. On Sunday, Chaudhary had secured top position in high jump also. She holds the national records in both events.



Men´s marathon will be held on Saturday.



Altogether 12 athletes will be selected in the first round on the basis of performance for the regional sporting event.
