KATHMANDU, June 10: Despite Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) receiving nearly 5,000 applications for its labor bank, the required number of architect engineers remains unmet.
Pawan Kumar Thakur, the focal person of the labor bank at the metropolis, disclosed that KMC had requested skilled unemployed individuals to join the labor bank in mid-August. Since then, a total of 4,770 applicants have applied. However, the number of architect engineers is low.
KMC’s labor bank receives 400 applications in a month
Thakur mentioned that only a handful of architects have applied, with the majority already employed elsewhere. Currently, KMC is in need of 17 architect engineers. To address this shortage, KMC has issued another public notice.
While other positions have been filled beyond the demand, the deficit in architect engineers persists. KMC has implemented a policy to operate the labor bank under the Metropolis Golden Scheme as part of its annual policy and program for the fiscal year 2023/24. Thakur explained that this initiative aims to enlist skilled workers engaged in various fields including social development, infrastructure building, maintenance, heritage preservation, environmental protection, and urban order maintenance.
Among the 600 individuals selected and assigned work from the applications received, the majority are involved in sanitation roles, as per KMC. Thakur said that the labor bank's objective is to provide a foundation for the unemployed. He stated, "The labor bank established by KMC contains details of workers such as their wages, profession, contact number, and address."
Based on this information, human resources can be allocated as per the requirement. Those interested in joining the labor bank for the current fiscal year must specify their desired profession and relevant experience, choosing from 64 professions listed in the application form. Completed forms should be submitted to the local ward office or KMC's employment service center. One should be a permanent resident of Kathmandu for joining the labor bank.
