KATHMANDU, Aug 7: CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal on Saturday defended his party’s decision to stay neutral in the parliament voting to elect new prime minister, and said the UML will not make any change to that decision.

He argued that there is no point of forming a simple majority government as that is certain to fail in ensuring peace and constitution. [break]

"Say for instance we formed a majority government headed by Prachanda. Will he be able to deliver peace and constitution to the country? No," he said while addressing a meeting of UML cadres at the party head office at Balkhu.

He also claimed that Nepali Congress (NC) leader Ram Chandra Poudel, who is vying for the prime ministerial post, will also fail to do the same. "It is not possible, even if we help Poudel win the post," he said.

He was of the view that the new government should be able to shoulder the responsibility of writing the constitution in the remaining 10 months and ensuring lasting peace. "Only a consensus government can accomplish these tasks," he added.
