KATHMANDU, Dec 3: The Nepal Police filed 19 cases of cooperative-related fraud at various courts across the country in the first four months of the current fiscal year, with the Kathmandu Valley recording the highest number of cases. Police records show that Gandaki Province emerged as the worst hit region in terms of financial volume.
According to the police headquarters, 11 of the total 19 cases were registered in the Kathmandu Valley, while the remaining eight were related to four provinces. Police have arrested 19 accused so far while 108 suspects remain at large.

In the Kathmandu Valley alone, alleged embezzlement through cooperatives amounted to Rs 320.03 million. Of the 73 accused in these cases, only two have been arrested, while 71 are still absconding.
Although Gandaki Province registered only two cases, it recorded the largest financial loss. The combined amount of alleged misappropriation in the province stood at Rs 1.86 billion in the review period. Police have arrested 15 accused in connection with these two high-value cases.
In Koshi Province, police registered one case involving cooperative fraud worth Rs 2 million, with all 10 accused in the case currently absconding.
Similarly, in Madhesh Province, two cases were filed with a combined embezzlement of Rs 920,000. None of the accused in these cases has been arrested so far, according to the police.
