Karnali province government provides over Rs 60 million relief to those affected by natural calamities

SURKHET, Aug 20: The Karnali Province Government has provided a relief amount of over Rs 60 million for the families of those who lost their lives in natural calamities.

The provincial government has provided a total of Rs 68.8 million in relief for 344 victim families as insurance compensation from Chaitra 2076 (mid-April 2020) to the first week of Shrawan 2081 (mid-July, 2024).

In the first phase, the families of 59 people who lost their lives due to various natural disasters were given an amount of Rs 1.8 million as insurance.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law (MoIAL) of the province, in the second phase, Rs 940,000 was provided to 47 people at a rate of Rs 200,000 each. In the third phase, Rs 13.2 million was given to 66 people, and in the fourth phase, Rs 34.4 million was provided for 172 people. This amount was granted through the National Insurance Company.

The MoIAL said that from the month of Shrawan to the end of Asar in the fiscal year 2023/24, Rs 34.2 million was paid to the families of 171 people who lost their lives in natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, lightning, and fires.

Krishna Bahadur Rokaya, the head of the Disaster Management Branch of the MoAIL, said that the families of 151 people who lost their lives in the Jajarkot earthquake were given Rs 30 million at the rate of Rs 200,000 each through their insurance cover.

According to Rokaya, the payment for the three people who died in the Jajarkot earthquake is still under process due to incomplete paperwork. Additionally, the families of 20 people who died in disasters other than the earthquake last year have received Rs 400,000 through insurance. The MoIAL said that these insurance payments have been granted as per the Group Personal Accident Insurance for 1.7 million people in Karnali province.
