KATHMANDU, Jan 17: Hari Krishna Karki (3257 votes) of the progressive-republic panel was elected as the new chairman of the Nepal Bar Association (NBA) on Thursday. He secured 75 votes more than his nearest rival Sher Bahadur KC (3182 votes) of democratic panel.
Sunil Kumar Pokharel has been elected as the general secretary while Mohan Ingnam has been elected treasurer. Both are from democratic panel [break]
Meanwhile, Janak Pandey (Eastern), Tika Ram Bhattarai (Central), Anita Gurung (Western), Padam Prasad Baidik (Mid-Western) and Rajendra Bahadur Saud (Far-Western) have been elected as vice-chairman. Pandey is from democratic panel while others belong to progressive-republic panel.
Similarly, Gajendra Shankar Timila, Ganesh Prasad Adhikari, Sagar Bista, Prashanna Krishna Das, Binita Karki, Laxmi Devi Dahal, Kedar Prasad Koirala, Saraswati Shrestha and Rajya Laxmi Bajracharya were elected as the NBA members.
According to election commissioner Rabiraj Bhandari, 83.83 percent of the eligible voters cast their ballots. Altogether 8,215 lawyers are affiliated with NBA.
