Johnny Depp wins against Amber Heard in defamation lawsuit

KATHMANDU,

Johnny Depp won his defamation lawsuit against his former wife Amber Heard after adjudication by a Virginia jury on Wednesday.

The jury awarded Depp $10,000,000 in compensatory damages and $5,000,000 in punitive damages in the trial. In Heard’s countersuit, the jury awarded $2,000,000 in compensatory damages to her after finding one of her points valid;that former Depp attorney Adam Waldman had defamed her when he told a tabloid she and her friends created a hoax that included roughing up her apartment to look worse for police.

The decision from a jury came after nearly 13 hours of deliberation spanning three days. The turbulent defamation trial, which started on April 11 and took place over the past six weeks, saw Depp and Heard exchange disturbing allegations of domestic violence and abuse.

In a statement,Depp said,"From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome.Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that."Depp added,"the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled."

Expressing her sadness in a statement,Heard said,"The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband. I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women."

She said, "It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously."
