Addressing an interaction in the capital on women´s issues and politics, Chairman Dahal said that Karki was recommended unanimously after the parties failed to choose someone from among the other possible candidates. [break]“All major political parties had proposed separate names for the post and these were rejected but Karki´s name was selected without any hesitation,” he said.
Some political parties and some members of civil society tried to show that Karki was the Maoist choice alone, he said, adding that that was totally wrong. Whatever decision has been taken about Karki as CIAA chairman, the responsibility has to be shared by all four political forces, he said. “It was too late to recommend another name in the last hours of the political decision-making and hence Karki was appointed finally,” he explained.
President Ram Baran Yadav had appointed controversial former bureaucrat Karki as chief of the CIAA on Wednesday in the teeth of stiff public and media criticism. The Constitutional Council on Sunday had proposed Karki for the post as per the recommendation of the major political forces.
“Analyzing any change in name would create other serious problems, so we didn´t make amy attempt to search out other names,” he added. There was no point in further discussions as the parties had debated this for more than a week, he added.
Further stating that Karki´s name was first proposed informally by the CPN-UML, Dahal said the Madhesi front later tabled it formally, and the four parties extended unanimous support and endorsement.
To a query about how the parties would face the upcoming elections, he said, “Obviously this is going to be an election issue but we will reveal the truth before the people.” He also called for optimistism and requested respect for the positive aspects of the person and the issue.
Refering to the selection of CIAA chief Karki and the formation of the CJ-led government, he said, “We chose the option from those available before us.” Society at present was the victim of political transition and politics were in a difficult, sensitive and indecisive situation, he said.
