The recently concluded General Assembly of the United Nations has decided to mark October 11 as the Girl Child Day.[break]
According to latest census, there are around 6 million adolescents in Nepal.
Children of 10-19 years age group are defined as adolescent. The National Planning Commission (NPC) and Nepal -based various UN agencies jointly organized a program to mark the day with an objective for exerting pressure to prepare various programs to address the adolescents.
Vice-President Parmanand Jha, while addressing the program said Nepal has made progress in social development like education, health, and communication.
Vice-President Jha underscored the need of further expanding the social awareness programs and making the youths as the development partners.
Acting Vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission Janak Kumar Shah and Joint-secretary Atmaram Pandey said that the government is working to prepare national work plan for the overall development of the adolescents.
United Nations International Children Fund representative in Nepal Hanna Singer stressed the need of making national plans as per the children´s desires.
