Kathmandu, April 28: Bad weather has been making the rescue and relief operations in the mountainous areas, hit hardest by the quake, more challenging. But the international community has pledged support to the victims despite the odds.

Organizing a press conference Tuesday at the UN House at Pulchowk, Lalitpur, UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative in Nepal, Jamie McGoldrick, said that the UN team was pursuing the rescue and relief operation collaborating with the government of Nepal and the UN has provided financial support worth 15 million US dollars to expedite the operation.

The UNRC McGoldrick shared that of total 8 million people living in the 39 quake-affected districts in the country two million in 11 districts are worst affected, out of which 1.4 million people are in dire need of food, shelter, health facility and security. McGoldrick shared this information after his on-site visit to Sindhupalchowk and Kavrepalanchowk districts.

As thousands of people in Kathmandu have been sheltering under tents for safety concerns since the 7.9-magnitude quake jolted Kathmandu on Saturday, McGoldrick said that the UN was making necessary arrangements for quality tents to these temporarily displaced ones. He was of the view that the resettlement of those displaced by the quake before the monsoon was quite a challenging task for the government.

Commending the search-and-rescue and relief operation being carried out by various humanitarian organizations together with local residents and civil society, the UN Coordinator also hailed the contributions of the Chief District Officers and Local Development Officers at this tough time.

On a different note, McGoldrick admitted that there was initially difficulty in receiving the rescue and relief materials provided by the international community given the only one international airport in Nepal but the situation has improved to great extent in last 24 hours as the airport has been in operation round the clock.

Hence, he appealed with the public not to loose patience at the time of trial and tribulation like this. He also shared that another meeting was called for tomorrow with the donor agencies in Nepal to announce support to the country in coping up with the aftermath of the quake. RSS
