In the absence of Internet facility, trekkers in the area have been facing problems in sending and receiving information. Four telephone lines of Nepal Telecom are the only means of communication in the region. Nepal Telecom distributed the lines via V-SAT technology about one and half years ago.
Him Bahadur Gurung, president of the sub-committee, said preparation to start Internet service via wireless has already begun. He said a tower with wireless device will be erected at Chhomrong very soon.
“The attraction of these areas will increase further once Internet service is started,” Gurung said.
At present, Internet service is available only up to Chhomrong.
ACAP has already provided Rs 500,000 for the project. The sub-committee is chipping in Rs 300,000 and remaining amount will be arranged locally, according to Gurung.
Meanwhile, state-run Nepal Telecom has said even it was preparing to expand Internet service in the area. “We are failing to provide Internet service in the area because of the lack of electricity. Now we are working on to add necessary infrastructure to start the service in the base camp area,” said Rajesh Regmi, assistant administrative officer of NT.
