KATHMANDU, Oct 2: An initial assessment has estimated that telephone and internet service provider companies have suffered about Rs 300 million in damages due to problems caused by continuous rainfall, including floods, landslides, and inundation.
According to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), the details of the damages incurred by internet service provider companies have not yet been fully compiled. However, it is estimated that the damages sustained by two telephone service providers, Nepal Telecommunications Company Limited (NTC) and Ncell Axiata Limited (Ncell), amount to about Rs 220 million.

"Initial reports indicate that NTC has suffered damages of about Rs 150 million, while Ncell has incurred damages of about Rs 70 million. Additionally, we have collected details from 15 internet service providers, which show that these companies have suffered initial damages of around Rs 75 million," said Dr Pradip Paudyal, assistant spokesperson for the NTA. He also mentioned that further details on the damages of internet service providers are still being collected.
Due to disruptions in electricity supply caused by problems such as floods, landslides, and inundation, telephone and internet services were also interrupted in many parts of the country. Dr Paudyal stated that as the electricity supply has stabilized, telecommunications services are gradually being restored.
He also said that teams have been deployed quickly to areas where problems have been observed to resume services. Since telephone and internet are essential services, the NTA is effortful to ensure that such service interruptions do not occur.
