The United States is the biggest single donor towards the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). According to the UNHCR, the U.S. has donated some $900 million in 2017. The European Union is the second biggest source of funds, having contributed more than $415 million.
A different picture emerges when breaking the sums down into per capita donations. With $16 per inhabitant the small European country, Luxembourg is the single biggest contributor towards the UN refugee relief effort. The United States stands in 10th place with a mere $3.
In its data, the UNHCR considers all governmental donors who fund its activities and contributions received from the private sector and national associations. The figures are rounded.
