KATHMANDU, Sept 27: Two unidentified persons opened fire at Mohammad Sanaullah, 40, an Indian citizen from Motihari, Bihar state, at a busy road at Narayantar, Jorpati, around 8:45 a.m. on Friday.

Shooting a man in the capital city in broad daylight just four days after a special security plan was put in place for the festival season, has raised some questions.

AIG Nabaraj Dhakal, Metropolitan Police Commissionar, has admitted ´weaknesses´ in the implementation of the plan. “We are trying to review the security plan and any lapses. We are also intensifying investigations into the incident” he told Republica. [break]

Sanaullah, who has been running a tailoring shop at Narayantar Chowk since the last few years, was seriously injured in the legs and abdominal region. Citing eyewitnesses, DSP Manoj KC, chief of Bouddha police, said, “Two unidentified men were waiting for the ´targeted man´ on his way to his shop, and the shooting took place all of sudden.” He was shot by the pillion rider. The gunmen apparently fled on a motorbike.

Sanaullah, who was on his bicycle, fell down crying for help, a witness told police. Police reached the spot within 10 minutes but by then the assailants were already out of sight, a local said.

With the help of eyewitness accounts police have dispatched facial sketches of the two and intensified the investigations. Sanaullah, who had returned from his home three months ago, was a temporary resident at Bouddha.

The seriously injured man was first taken to Shankharapur Hospital and later transferred to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Maharajgunj where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

As of late evening he has ungergone a successful operation, with a bullet removed from the abdominal regional, according to hospital sources. He was hit on the sides of the thighs, the lower abdomen and the lower middle chest.

It is not hard to guess that Sanaullah was shot with an intention to kill, from the front side, said SSP Bijaya Lal Kayastha, chief of Metropolitan Police Crime Division. They are intensifying the investigation and trying to relate the case to what happened in the past, he added.

According to an investigation officer, police are looking for any connection with fake currency rackets or international intelligence agencies.

Bouddha police and the crime division are probing the case and some individuals were interrogated as of late evening. Police also questioned Sanaullah´s 14-year-old son, who is studying at a Madarsha at Jorpato, to find out if there was any dispute or quarrel with any family members or neighbors.

Police are waiting for other members of the family to make further enquiries.
