India also has expressed hope that the Interim Election Government, with support from all the political parties and the people of Nepal, will move forward in the spirit of the political agreements reached, including with regard to the election. “India stands behind the people of Nepal in their efforts to build a stable, democratic and prosperous Nepal and will continue to extend all possible cooperation to the people and Government of Nepal in accordance with their aspirations and priorities,” the statement added.
In a separate statement, the US has also congratulated the people of Nepal on reaching agreement for the formation of a new interim council, which will carry the responsibility of overseeing national elections.
Issuing a press release on Thursday, the US said the formation of the Interim Council of Ministers for Elections lays a foundation for vital further action, including completing and adopting Nepal´s new constitution and holding free, fair, and inclusive national elections in June that reflect the will of the Nepali people.
“As Nepal´s political leaders continue to work on political and governance issues, the United States welcomes further progress by the parties that will continue to safeguard the rights of all citizens and reaffirm the national commitment to building a democratic, representative, and prosperous Nepal,” the statement further said.
The US has also assured all necessary support to make election happen in Nepal. “As in the past, the United States stands ready to assist Nepal as these national elections approach,” the statement added.
Likewise, UK Minister for South Asia, Hugo Swire MP has welcomed the development saying, “It is good to see real progress on the road to an enduring democracy in Nepal and I strongly welcome the creation of an interim election council to oversee Nepal’s elections."
"This is a positive step towards giving Nepal’s people their say on the country’s future. Free, fair, safe and credible elections are vital in giving a renewed mandate to Nepal’s political leaders to complete the peace process and create the foundations for lasting stability and prosperity," a statement issued by Swire said.
While assuring UK´s support in any way it can, Minister Swire also urged all political forces in Nepal to support the Interim Election Council and Election Commission in their challenging task between now and elections.
