KATHMANDU, Feb 20: The indefinite curfew imposed in the Birgunj Metropolitan area to contain violent protests has been temporarily lifted from 6AM to 10AM today. Curfew was imposed by the District Administration Office (DAO) Parsa in Birgunj from 5 PM on Monday.
At least 11 police personnel were injured as the agitating protestors targeted police personnel on duty with stones. This came after police personnel tried to intervene in the two separate groups trying to engage in clashes.
The DAO said that the curfew will result after 10AM today.
A demonstration was held on Monday in Birgunj after clashes between the two religious groups in Motipur of Ishnath Municipality of Rautahat on February 15. The DAO Rautahat imposed a curfew after the protests turned violent.
According to Dinesh Sagar Bhushal, Chief District Officer at DAO Parsa, 11 individuals including nine members of Nepal Police and two members of Armed Police Force were injured during the clash. They were targeted with stones while attempting to settle the dispute between the two parties.
District Police Office Parsa stated that the injured police personnel are being treated at Narayani Hospital.
To stabilize the situation, District Administration Office (DAO) Parsa has imposed a curfew order from 5PM on Monday in Birgunj. The DAO has issued a curfew order in areas within Nagwa Chowk in the east, Tilawe Bridge in the west, Parwanipur in the north and Miteri Bridge in the south.
The DAO has strictly prohibited entry and exit, gatherings, outdoor activities, processions, rallies, and any other unlawful activities within the designated curfew zone.
