KATHMANDU, Jan 17: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Ayodhee Prasad Yadav has said that holding local polls by the last week of May is possible only if the election-related bills are readied by the end of this month.
Speaking at an interaction at Reporters’ Club on Tuesday, CEC Yadav said that Election Commission is in confusion as political leaders have proposed holding polls at varying dates.
“Some parties have been saying that local polls should be held in March -April, some in the next month and others in May-June,” he said, “EC is surprised by such separate dates.”
He added that the possibilities of holding local polls in March-April have now ended.
He said that the polls should be held in a phase-wise manner.
“Local polls should be held in a phase-wise manner; in two or three phases. It is necessary to coordinate with security bodies before finalizing it,” he said.
CEC Yadav added that EC is also ready to hold elections of House of Representatives if a political consensus is forged.
