SIRAHA, Aug 19: The confiscation of illegally held firearms from the locals of Siraha district over the recent days has cast doubt on effectiveness of the government´s drive to avert violence incidents in the run-up to the Constituent Assembly election slated for November 19.

In the last few weeks, the police in the district have confiscated half a dozen fire arms from various parts of the district. According to the District Police Office, the fire arms were seized from Majhauliya, Dumauri, Kalyanpur Jabadi, Sarshwar, and Bishnupur VDCs. [break]

Only last week, Kalyanpur Mirchaula Police Office had arrested two locals in possession of firearms and handed them over to the District Police Office. Raj Kumar Paswan, 32, of Kalyanpur VDC-4 was apprehended last Thursday with a firearm and Ram Babu Yadab was rounded up the next day from Kalyanpur VDC-1.

“We arrested both of them immediately and few are still at large. They threw their arms and fled before we arrived,” said Inspector Gyan Kumar Mahato. Police had reached Kalyanpur after being tipped off about a gun battle. “The use of illegal firearms has increased lately despite our endeavor to collect them. It´s hard to believe that people are still carrying firearms openly without any restrictions,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ramesh Tamang.
