KATHMANDU, May 21: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Friday disclosed he was averse to the idea of the Constituent Assembly (CA) before then Seven Party Alliance (SPA) agreed to the Maoist proposal.

Talking to media persons at Tribhuvan International Airport Norwegian Minister for Environment and International Development Erik Solheim, Prime Minister Nepal, who was heading the CPN-UML, said his party had agreed to go for the CA to please the Maoists thinking that it would be in the larger interest of the country. The CPN-UML was one of the key allies in the SPA that spearheaded Jana Aandolan II.

“I had agreed to the proposal of the Constituent Assembly to please the Maoists,” he said. “I believed that constitution could be written through alternatives other than Constituent Assembly.”

He claimed that the Maoists themselves are now bent on dissolving the CA by putting forth conditions for its term extension.

Prime Minister Nepal also said that the determination of the number of combatants to be integrated in various security agencies by the Maoists will pave way for the formation of national consensus government.
