KATHMANDU, June 11: Nepali Congress member of parliament (MP) Deepak Giri has termed MPs as 'Jholeys' (stooges).

MP Giri said he salutes Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, saying that Shah has elevated the "Jholey" MPs to the level of ward chairpersons.

Participating in the discussion on the budget in parliament on Sunday, he said, “I salute Mayor shah. At least he elevated us stooges to the level of ward chairpersons.”

MP Giri also said that distortions have increased because the MPs are not honest. He said that the general public keep their problems every day, but the parliamentarians are not in a position to help them, and the parliamentarians have become stooges.

“I want to question the MPs’ capacities. I would like to call myself a stooge. I received a phone call in the middle of the night from an elderly woman who said her goat had died and if I could help her in any way. Similarly, she said her daughter-in-law who had gone to Nepalgunj to buy books for her son 27 days ago hasn’t returned yet, requesting for her search. Does the public know that the job of an MP is to make laws? They don’t,” said MP Giri.

Lawmaker Giri also said that if the MPs were honest, not only Rs 50 million (Constituency Development Fund) but any amount would be spent for the right purpose.

He accused the finance ministers and the leaders of the ruling alliance of allocating the budget only for their districts. “Former finance minister Bishnu Paudel allocates the budget focusing on Butwal. The CPN-UML lawmakers from the neighboring districts complain [about the same]. Even now, we hear that budget allocation is based on the interests of the leaders of the ruling coalition.”

MP Giri also suggested that the budget speech be made public at 10 AM instead of 4 PM.
