KATHMANDU, May 20: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah has inspected community schools within the metropolis.

Mayor Shah visited Shivapuri Secondary School, Maharajgunj and Padma Kanya Secondary School, Dillibazaar on Friday and took stock of teaching and learning methods and vocational skills. Earlier last week, he had inspected Durbar High School.

It may be noted that Shah has been prioritizing reforms and development in education since assuming office. Shah has made a schedule to sit with students and chat about educational activities on each Friday.

"We on Friday morning inspected Shivapuri Secondary School in Kathmandu. I got an opportunity to sit with students and learn about educational activities through the 'skill-based programme. I also got an opportunity to learn about participation of students and teachers through the 'book free Friday' programme. During the inspection, I also took an opportunity to learn about the impacts of the skill-based programme on the future of children. I have taken information about the current situation of the school, required infrastructures, human resources and other needs for the school for the holistic development of children," said Balen.

The KMC has launched the book free Friday programme since 25 April, 2023. There are a total of 89 community schools operational within the KMC (59 secondary and 30 primary) where at least 52,000 children have been enrolled, according to available data. Similarly, 540 private schools are in operation where at least 150,000 children have been enrolled.
