Husband burns wife with heated ladle for not bringing dowry

BHAIRAHAWA, Oct 2: A woman in Lumbini has lodged a complaint against her husband at the Area Police Office (APO), Lumbini, accusing him of burning her with heated ladle for not bringing along cycle in dowry.


Amrawati Teli, 23, of Bhaishiya accused her husband and in-laws of repeatedly beating and torturing her for not bringing cycle in dowry. Following her complaint, police have arrested her husband Govinda Teli, 23, and father-in-law Megh Teli and have initiated action against them as per the legal provisions. However, the victim's mother-in-law Bagaudi, 60, is at large after the incident.


Amrawati, who was reportedly burned with a heated iron ladle, had tied the knot with Govinda just a year ago. As both of them were destitute, they soon started having disputes especially due to financial strain. The victim laments that her in-laws subjected her to various kinds of violence after marriage.

According to the victim's statement given to police, she was locked inside her home and then lashed by a heated ladle on September 15. Six days later, she reached the APO with her parents to file a complaint.


DSP Kumod Dhungel of Rupandehi informed that the heated ladle has caused burn injuries to the victim's thighs and ankles. According to him, police immediately arrested the accused after seeing the condition of the victim. Police have forwarded the process for filing a case against the arrestees.


Amrawati's husband Govinda has admitted to the crime. He stated that he lost his calm as he suspected his wife of talking to other men on phone. However, the victim's father -in-law has been claiming that he was in field when the incident occurred. Amrawti is currently undergoing treatment at Bhairahawa-based Bhim Hospital. She will be living with her parents after recuperating.


DSP Dhungel said the case has been filed against the accused at the Rupandehi District Court.
