The report submitted to President Dr Ram Baran Yadav at the latter´s residence at Shital Niwas on Wednesday states that the NHRC received 345 complaints in 2011 against 403 in 2010. Similarly, the NHRC monitored 179 cases in 2011 against 229 cases in 2010.

According to the report, the commission has made 146 recommendations to the government to take necessary legal actions against those found guilty of human rights violations. The commission had made 162 recommendations in 2010.

“These facts show that the trends and number of human rights violations have decreased this year,” NHRC Spokesperson Gauri Pradhan told Republica.

In 2010, the commission had taken 780 decisions, while it has taken 579 decisions this year.

At a meeting with President Yadav, officials of NHRC, including Chairman Kedarnath Upadhyay, briefed the president about human rights challenges in the country.

According to Pradhan, they informed the president about the challenges faced by the commission due to delay in passing the National Human Rights Commission Act by the government.

“We informed the president that National Human Rights Commission Act has remained in limbo for the last three years. The governments express their commitment to bring the act but there has been no progress,” said Pradhan, adding, “You (president) should also draw the government´s attention in this regard.”

He said they also informed the president about the government´s indifference toward taking action against those found guilty of serious human rights violations.
