KATHMANDU, March 12: Ramadan, one of the biggest festivals of the Muslim community, began today.
During this festival, the faithful observe a month-long fasting from sunrise to sunset which is also called Roja. Each Roja begins after the morning prayers and ends with the evening prayers for a month. Muslims have seri in the morning before the sighting of the sun and then have iftar after sunset.
Holy month of Ramadan begins from tomorrow
Those observing the fast also recite the sacred Quran and involve themselves in other religious activities.
Ramadan also encourages Muslims to dedicate themselves to charity, serving the poor and needy, zakat or obligatory donation. The festival ends with the celebration of the Id festival at the end of the month.
