KATHMANDU, Jan 9: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has explained that the “Human Metapneumovirus” (HMPV) found in China is a common virus. The ministry released a press statement on Wednesday to address false information spreading in the media and online, advising the public to ignore these rumors.
"It is natural for respiratory infections to increase during the winter months. Human Metapneumovirus is not a new virus; it has been previously detected in Nepal and causes common cold symptoms. Nepal has the capacity and preparedness for testing, monitoring, and responding to this virus," the press release stated.
If common cold only, don't panic: Health Ministry
The ministry further informed that the risk of severe issues from this virus is low and that its infection generally affects individuals with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly. However, the ministry has increased vigilance and monitoring through the Department of Health Services, the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, hospitals, and laboratories.
The ministry recommended adhering to public health measures for HMPV, Mpox, and other infectious diseases. It advised everyone to take personal protective measures such as wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, and practicing hand hygiene with soap and water. It also urged people to avoid close contact with patients, seek medical advice if health issues arise, and contact the Ministry's Hello Health Call Center at 1115 for consultations.
