His blue handkerchief

Scene 1: The home
He is going to leave home for the first time, and for many years. He steps out of the door, content with curiosity and a fear about how his life is going to shape up next.

Scene 2: The college
He enters the classroom. Plain shirt buttoned to the neck, shoes filthy, hair groomed to the side. Everyone in the class stare at him from top to bottom, with complete shock and disgust. Out of all the people, a girl offers him a seat; her gracious smile is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen.

Scene 3: The hostel
He is in his room, studying. Beside him lies his new friend, sleeping like a log. Suddenly the door opens and four random guys enter the room. They take a moment to stop, and stare and laugh at him, as they pass across the room and make way towards the other guy sleeping beside him. One of the guys then takes out a mysterious little black plastic bag from his jacket, wrapped in which is the ‘magic stuff’. They smoke it up and ask him to join along. He denies at first, but eventually decides to give in, not out of curiosity, but because of a desperate desire to have a company.

Scene 4: The classroom
It’s been almost a year he has been in love with this girl. To his own surprise, she has even talked to him quite a number of times. And he has begun to think she has feelings for him as well. How would a poor little fellow from a far-flung village know what goes in the conniving mind of a clever urban girl? He keeps falling for the girl, and loses himself writing poems and sketching pictures of her.

Scene 5: The college cafeteria
He walks up to her, with a flower in his hand, terrifies her. She lets out a fright cry as if she is being attacked by a wild creature and  ignores him and runs along with her friends. He becomes a subject of hilarious display and a victim of his own stupidity. But this isn’t what bothers him the most, for he has been humiliated many times before, this time it was by someone he truly loved and cared for. This is too difficult for him to bear, the fact that in no time all his long-term dreams had shattered to pieces, within mere seconds. Now there was no hope at all. It was all over.

Scene 6:
The room (Part II)

His eyes appear vicious, as if they don’t belong to an earthly creature; as if they aren’t looking at something but through it. He stares at the ceiling. The light chases his gaze; there is a rope hanging idly. He holds it firmly and enters his face through it. As his neck is enclosed by the rope, a series of flashbacks of incidents appear before him. The friends appear smoking around, laughing, and so does the beautiful lady, dancing around.

He loses all hopes and reasons to live his life. “This is it”, he murmurs and shuts his eyes. He gets the hold of the rope, tightens it and snaps. And with the last deep breath that he exhales, his fists are wide open, out of which a thin blue handkerchief drifts slowly into the air and onto the floor.
