Superintendent of Police Rajendra Man Shrestha said they do not know anything about the murderers and the motive behind the killing.
Irate locals and his supporters shut down the local market against the killing. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
A large crowd of locals in Birgunj, which is a stronghold of Hindu groups, welcomed ex-king Gyanendra Shah and his son Paras who visited the town in the recent days.
Meanwhile, members of the Hindu group have accused the Maoists for the killing.

Tiwari had allegedly led a retaliation group against the Maoists when the latter imposed an indefinite general strike across the country in the first week of May. Hindu groups vandalized the tented camps and logistics of the Maoists in Birgunj during the strike. Hundreds of Maoists had fled the areas following the attack and vandalism.
"A week after the retaliation, Tiwari received death threats from several cadres and leaders from the Maoist party," an advisor to the Hindu group Jyoti Lal Sah said.
