Sea buckthorn (DALE CHUK), heralded as the new wonder fruit, is a native wild bush found in hillside regions of Nepal, from Mugu to Taplejung. Currently, there are over 9 species of sea buckthorn known in the world, the two most common found in Nepal are Hippophae tibetana and Hippophae salicifolia.
Sea buckthorn berries has 15 times the Vitamin C found in oranges, and is also rich in carotenoids, Vitamin A , E, amino acids, Omega ( 3,6,7 , 9 ) , antioxidants, phytosterols and tocopherols, which make the berries valuable for consumption.

It is also believed that Genghis Khan fortified his horses and army with a sea buckthorn diet to increase their stamina.
Sea buckthorn has long been used in traditional Indian medicine to treat diarrhea, skin disorders, Ulcers, and cardiac disease, and to promote tissue regeneration.
Russian scientists have developed drugs from sea buckthorn oil to increase immunity. The berries are also believed to be potent against cancer and the dengue virus.
In historical records, Chinese people seem to have been the first ones to use this plant as a medicinal plant. More than a thousand years ago dating back to the 8th century, sea buckthorn was recorded in Sibu Yidian, a classical medical Tibetan book.
