Happy Dashain

The country is in a festive mood these days as it is bracing itself for the celebrations of Dashain, our national festival. From today, the celebrations will be on in full swing until the 10th day of Dashain, also known as Bijaya Dashami – the victory of good over evil – which falls on Oct 17. People have already started leaving for their hometowns to be with their family and friends for the Dashami celebrations. Soon the crowded Kathmandu streets will be empty and there will be serpentine lines of devotees in the temples of Goddess Durga in Kathmandu and other parts of the country. It is a time of great importance for Nepalis, particularly for the majority of Hindus in Nepal and elsewhere. Republica family wishes all Nepalis and its readers a very happy Dashain. We would also like to inform our readers that the print edition of our paper will not be available from Oct 16 to Oct 19, though we will be regularly updating our website with the latest national and international news.

Since Dashain is one of the biggest festivals of Nepal, the government needs to take care of a few things so that there are no untoward incidents. As it is also the biggest shopping season of the Nepalis, the government needs to make sure that the prices of essential commodities are not hiked. The government should also strengthen law and order in the country so that all of us can celebrate it without any fear. As many Nepalis will be traveling during Dashain, the government needs to ensure the safety of passengers by deploying more traffic police along the national highways, and establish various checkpoints to make sure that the drivers are not under the influence of alcohol. Similarly gambling, which unfortunately have come to be associated with Dashain, should be checked and those found inciting others to gamble should be duly punished.

Today the country is going through a difficult period. Lack of flexibility on the part of some of the major political parties’ has resulted in a political stalemate. The country seems to be in a standstill politically and peoples’ democratic aspirations have not been fulfilled yet. As Dashain is also a time to reconcile differences, bury past hatchets and move forward in a positive direction, we urge our leaders to come together again and work toward fulfilling the promises made to the people in the past, and also make serious efforts to promulgate a new constitution next year. That would be a true Dashain gift to Nepal and Nepalis.
