Handicraft export falls

KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Exports of Nepali handicraft fell by 9.01 percent in the first month of the current fiscal year, data made available by the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) show. According to the federation, Nepal exported handicraft worth Rs 270.45 million in the first month of the current fiscal while the export during the corresponding period last year was Rs 297.2.[break]



While export of most handicraft products fell, export of silver jewelry rose by 90.89 percent. Silver jewelry comprised 17.36 percent of total handicraft export during the period. Silver jewelry worth Rs 46.9 were exported during the month against the export Rs 24.6 million during the corresponding period last year. Export of felt products, which made up 11.8 percent of total handicraft exports, went up by 20.64 percent to Rs 31.9 million while export of metal products, which make up 9.22 percent of the total, rose slightly to Rs 24.9 million. Likewise, plastic goods, hemp goods, glass products, ceramic products and incense also witnessed slight improvement.



While pashmina and woolen products continued to be the biggest exports, making up 21.44 percent and 20.01 percent of total handicraft exports, respectively, their export fell in during the month. Export of pashmina products fell from the Rs 77.8 million last year to Rs 57.99 million this year.



Similarly, Nepal exported woolrn products worth Rs 54.12 in the month, which is 15.64 percent less than the export during the same period last year. Similarly, export of traditional Thanka paintings also went down significantly. Export of the painting went down by a whooping 81.95 percent, compared to the same period last year, to Rs 378,382.



Export of handmade paper products dropped by 42.74 percent to Rs 13.37 million; wood craft by 48.27 percent to Rs 2.96 million and silk products by 48.96 percent to Rs 9.23 million.



Export of bone and horn products, cotton goods, aloe goods, dhaka products, stone craft, leather goods, bead items and bamboo products also declined.
