Gurung becomes millionaire thru yak farming

MANANG, Feb 28: At a time when hundreds of Nepali youths are leaving the country for foreign employment on a daily basis, 32-year-old Kanchha Gurung of Nesyang Rural Municipality-6 of the district finds his future in yak farming.

MANANG, Feb 28: At a time when hundreds of Nepali youths are leaving the country for foreign employment on a daily basis, 32-year-old Kanchha Gurung of Nesyang Rural Municipality-6 of the district finds his future in yak farming.


Gurung, who had started his livestock farming with 10 yaks 21 years ago, has become a millionaire now. He has now as many as 60 yaks in his yak farm. He is making money by selling dairy products – cheese, ghee, ice cream, yoghurt, chhurpi, etc – and yaks themselves.

A kg of yak ghee costs Rs 2, 500 in the local market. He sells it at the hotels in Manang and Pokhara and at times hotels abroad.


Similarly, the price of a yak ranges from Rs 120,000 to RS 130,000. Gurung sells four to five yaks a year which will fetch him up to Rs 1.2 million while the total valuation of the yaks he possesses now might go up to Rs 50 million.
