Gurukul leads basketball league with 4th straight win

KATHMANDU, March 2: Gurukul registered its fourth consecutive victory in the First Kirtipur Cup Basketball Tournament on Saturday to lead the points table with eight points.



Gurukul defeated GoldenGate 77-66 in the league match held at Kirtipur Basketball Court. It was GoldenGate´s first defeat in the last four matches. However, GoldenGate is right on the heels of Gurukul in the second position with seven points. [break]



Saturday´s game that decided the league leader was a close contest in which Gurukul secured the all-important two points in the last quarter. Both the teams played an 18-18 draw in the first quarter while Gurukul edged past GoldenGate 17-16 by a slim margin in the second quarter. Gurukul lost the third quarter 21-23 to give a slight advantage to GoldenGate. However, Gurukul bounced back to win the fourth quarter 21-9 to turn the tide in its favor. Binoj Maharjan topscored 20 points for the winning team.



In other matches played under the double round robin league, Naya Bazar Club, Kirtipur and Tribhuvan Army Club registered victories.



Naya Bazar defeated Whitehouse 72-60 riding on 28 points from Ayush Singh. Naya Bazar took the first quarter 27-10 for a massive lead, which was enough to seal victory despite losing the next two quarters. Whitehouse fought back to seal the second and third quarters 13-17, 14-16 in its favor but the margin was not enough for victory. Naya Bazar then won the final quarter 18-17 to deal the final blow to Whitehouse.



This was Kirtipur´s second victory in three matches while Whitehouse has only won one match out of four.



Meanwhile, Army saw off NASA 66-55 to register its first victory in three matches. Siddhartha Maharjan scored 19 points for Army. It was NASA´s fourth straight loss in as many matches.



NASA took the first quarter 12-7 and extended its lead with a 24-21 win in the second quarter. However, it could not hold on to its lead and slumped to a 8-19 defeat in the third quarter. NASA´s breakdown continued in the fourth quarter as it lost 12-19 to hand the game to Army.
