JANAKPUR, May 3: Madhes-based political leader Jaya Prasad Gupta, who has recently been released after serving a jail term on corruption charge, has launched Tarai-Madhes campaign in a bid to revive the issues raised during the Madhes movement.

The campaign is aimed at bringing together all the agitating Madhesi groups and those that are in talks with the government to consolidate their position on issues raised during the Madhes movement. [break]

“Madhesi people are frustrated with the Madhesi parties,” said an active participant of the campaign Rajiv Jha. “Though Madhes-based parties secured votes in the previous election, it is unlikely for them to get the same result in the upcoming polls.”

Jha said there was now a need for a new political force that can effectively work toward fulfilling the aspirations of the Madhesi people at large. “Though there are many parties that represent Madhes, they are not serious about the issues raised during the Madhes movement,” he further said.

Jha also argued that it would be wiser to first analyze the causes of the failure of the previous Constituent Assembly (CA) before going to the fresh polls. He also said that Election Commission (EC) should have started registration of the political parties only after completing necessary homework for polls.

“The issue of citizenship certificates is still unresolved, while the EC is yet to complete voter registration. Moreover, the government has not announced the poll date yet,” he complained.
