KATHMANDU, May 3: The government has decided to request foreign search and rescue teams working in Nepal to return home.

A meeting of the Central Natural Disaster Relief Committee on Sunday took a decision to this effect.

Around 4,045 volunteers from 34 countries have been assisting Nepal in the search and rescue operations in the aftermath of April 25 earthquake. So far, 7,250 bodies have been recovered, while 14,266 have been injured in the quake."We express gratitude to the foreign teams for their support and request them to return to their respective countires," said Laksmi Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Nepali teams will carry out search and rescue operations, he added.

As per the international standards, the foreign rescue teams usually return home 7-8 days after the disaster.

Likewise, he also said that only limited foreign health workers will be allowed to assist the government in providing health services to the earthquake victims.

Currently, over 700 health workers from 34 countries are providing health services to the quake victims across the country. "The Health ministry will allow only a few teams of health workers to work in the country on the basis of their expertise. Others will be asked to return home ," informed Dhakal.
