Some junk food producers on Thursday met Education Minister Dinanath Sharma demanding that they be allowed to supply their products to schools smoothly and the Department held consultations with guardians to this regard on Friday.
Department´s Director General Jeevan Prabha Lama said it has been difficult for the department to carry out monitoring on the food ingredients of junk food in the absence of risk analysis. No criteria have been set for the production of food in Nepal, Lama said.
Taking voices being raised by the education sector following the quality of junk food for children under 12 as positive, Lama expressed commitment to controlling the use of ajinomoto in junk food.
It is found that generally a packet of a noodle in the Nepali market contains one gram of ajinomoto.
During the discussions, representatives from Guardians´ Association of Nepal said unhygienic food have a serious impact on the mental development of children and the government and bodies concerned should be serious towards that end.
