Govt ready to appoint envoys

KATHMANDU, July 14: The government is preparing to appoint ambassadors vacant in various countries.



The Task Force constituted under the convenorship of Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arjun Bahadur Thapa has already presented its preliminary draft to the government on appointing ambassadors and appointment will be made by approving it very soon. [break]



As it is Nepal´s turn on alphabetical order to appoint Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Nepal will handle it after February 28, 2014. International tradition is such that appointment should be made six months in advance.



The Nepalese Mission to UN in New York is without permanent representative for a year and the government has not been able to appoint ambassador in New Delhi for the past three years.



Hundreds of thousands of Nepalese have been facing difficulties for absence of ambassador in New Delhi also hindering to take the relations with the nearest neighbor to new heights.



Nepal is yet to send new ambassadors to Thailand, Egypt, Malaysia and Germany, and the post will be vacant in Sri Lanka in a few months.



Asked by RSS how can embassies work for national interest without ambassadors, Thapa, also the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, said government will decide very soon.



On code of conduct of election to be effective from next week, he said ambassadors can be appointed on agreement with Election Commission. And, it can be prior to enforcing of the code of conduct, he said.



The government is appointing 50 percent from Foreign Service and the rest from political party recommendations.



Joint Secretary Thapa´s task force has recommended 70 percent from Foreign Service, said one member on condition of unanimity.



Nepal can do the same as Bangladesh, which has been appointing 70 percent from Foreign Service, he gave an example.
