KATHMANDU, July 18: The government spent only 61.44 percent of the budget allocated for the development work in the last fiscal year.

It was one of the lowest percent of the capital expenditures of the country in the past few years. Out of the targeted amount of Rs 380.38 billion, only Rs 233.69 billion was spent last year.

Capital expenditure involves expenses made in infrastructure development, construction, and other sectors that help generate real capital in the country. Poor capital spending has almost been a perennial problem in the country, taking the economy to a slow pace of development.

Continuing its ritual of last hour spending, the government had made rampant spending of Rs 43.65 billion in just one week before the end of the last fiscal year. Similarly, the development expenditure during one month of mid-June and mid-July was Rs 83.30 billion, more than half of what the government had spent in the first 11 months of the last fiscal year.
