KATHMANDU, Sept 5: The government has requested the UN World Food Program (WFP) to continue food distribution which the latter had suspended following allegations that recent outbreak of cholera in some mid-western districts was due to the poor quality of food distributed by the UN agency.

According to a press statement issued by the WFP, the government asked it to continue with its operations stating that the food distributed by the agency did not cause cholera epidemic in some mid and far western districts.“

"We would like to reiterate what has already been stated by the Ministry of Health and Population, this crisis was a result of contaminated water as well as poor sanitation and hygiene practices," the Office of the Prime Minister stated in a letter sent to Richard Ragan, country representative of WFP-Nepal, on Friday.

The government has proposed forming a joint task force comprising technical specialists from the WFP to investigate into the causes behind the cholera outbreak.
