This was announced on the occasion of the late maestro's 72nd birth anniversary during an event held at Nepal Music School in Gaushala.Explaining how this project came to life, Yonjan's wife Renchin said that she had met Katherine Reagan, the head of the division at Cornell, two years ago. Katherine expressed an interest in archiving some of Gopal's belongings at the division but Renchin felt she wasn't ready then.
The agreement was finally reached in July 30 this year. Renchin said, "While preparing for this project, I found that Gopal's works can actually be categorized into 16 groups. His compositions cover ballet, philosophical, spiritual, nationalistic, romantic, dancing melodies, folk based, women, instrumental, children, films, documentaries, drama, thematic, ballad, and tele-film."
As part of the archive, Yonjan's notebooks, photographs, audio and video recordings, musical notations, digital files, and one of this three harmoniums will be handed over to Cornell. His lyrics will also be translated to English.
These materials are to be shared freely for scholars and researchers.
The archiving is expected to be ready for audience within a period of two years and will be housed in the Carl A Kroch Library.
At the event, Renchin exhibited some photos from Yonjan's childhood and also requested his colleagues and contemporaries to share any photographs or memorabilia concerning Yonjan.
