KATHMANDU, July 22: Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party (NWPP) lawmaker Prem Suwal has said that passing the Citizenship Bill through fast track is not in the interest of the country.

Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Friday, MP Suwal said that it is not in the interest of the country to pass the Citizenship Bill through fast track. Suwal said that the Citizenship Bill should be sent to the relevant committees. He said that since the subject of citizenship is a subject related to sovereignty, it is necessary to make an agenda to discuss it with the public.

He said, "The matter of trying to pass the Citizenship Bill through fast track is not in the interest of the country."

Suwal said that the open border should be closed to solve the citizenship problem of Nepal. He said that the children of only Nepali mothers and fathers should be given Nepali citizenship.

MP Suwal said that citizenship based on descent should be made mandatory for filing candidacy in elections, joining government service, political appointments and engaging in business and trade. Similarly, he said that Nepalis should be discouraged from marrying foreigners and that foreign women or men married to Nepalis should be given citizenship of Nepal only if they pass the written test and interview on Nepali language and culture after 20 years of marriage.
