DANG, Feb 7: Local villagers on Sunday padlocked the entrance gate to a local landfill site used for dumping garbage collected from Ghorahi bazaar of Dang, accusing the municipality of not paying heeds to their demands.

Locals of Karaunti Danda, where the landfill site is situated, have announced not to let the municipality dump its garbage unless their demands are met. [break]

"The municipality has been operating the landfill site without consulting us," Ramjee Chaudhary, president of the Landfill Management Committee, said. "We asked the municipality time and again for proper management of the landfill site, but to no avail."

The municipality has not recognized the Chaudhary-led management committee, though. The committee has sought official recognition from the municipality as well, as it is constituted after a general assembly of local villagers of Karaunti Dada.

Besides, the committee has demanded, among others, that the municipality spray pesticide around the landfill site twice a month, set up a health post and arrange for regular check ups of locals living in the affected locality.

Garbage has piled up across Ghorahi bazaar, thanks to locals´ obstruction to garbage disposal. Meanwhile, the municipality has asked locals to come for talks.
