TANAHU, Nov 8: Minister for Economic Affairs of Gandaki Province, Jit Prakash Alemagar, has said that the cases of gender-based violence (GBV) have declined since the country adopted the federal republic.

He argued that women's ownership of land has helped make them self-dependent. Minister Alemagar made such an observation during a meeting of the National Women Commission (NWC) organized with security agencies on how the GBV could be reduced.

"With the enforcement of the new constitution, more financial rights are provided to women. Gender stereotypes have also waned," he emphasized. Women's growing participation in government and politics has also contributed to decrease violence against them, according to him.

On the occasion, NWC Chairperson Kamala Parajuli said women have been involved actively in various fronts of society, which helps reduce violence against them. She sought cooperation from politics and society as a whole to establish women in society. 

"NWC has received complaints that women faced inconvenience and were deprived of their rights after removing women development offices from the districts following the adoption of the federal republic," she shared.

Chief of the district coordination committee in Tanahu, Shanti Raman Wagle, stressed the need for making women financially independent so that they would be confident. Women are facing violence even at their homes, he said, claiming that comparatively, Gandaki Province has recorded fewer numbers of GBV.

Chief District Officer Chhabi Lal Rijal said it is essential to realize and promote the religious and traditional values that respect women.

For women's safety with lessening GBV, the government needs to allocate an additional budget, according to NWC member Krishna Kumari Paudel.
