KATHMANDU, Oct 13: The government has declared the chairman of the Federation of Contractors' Association of Nepal (FCAN) Sharad Kumar Gauchan a martyr. He was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the capital on Monday afternoon.
A cabinet meeting held on Friday took a decision to declare him martyr amid demands of construction contractors and the victim's family to declare him martyr and punish those involved in his killing in broad daylight in the capital city.

Gauchan was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Om Shanti Chowk when he was heading on his Toyota Prado jeep toward FCAN's office from his home in Shantinagar. Gauchan sustained three bullet injures and was rushed to the Civil Service Hospital where the doctors pronounced him brought dead.
Eyewitnesses told police that two men had first hurled stones at Gauchan's vehicle and opened fire after the vehicle stopped. The incident happened at around 3.15 pm, according to eyewitnesses.
Gauchan's family had agreed to receive his body after the government made a written commitment to declare him a martyr. Last rites of Gauchan was held on Thursday.
