Garbage disposal resumes

KATHMANDU, June 16: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) resumed dumping garbage at Sisdole Landfill Site in Nuwakot from Wednesday.



Earlier, garbage collection had remained obstructed since Friday following protests from locals of Sisdole demanding implementation of past agreements signed with them.[break]



An agreement was signed among the Ministry of Local Development, KMC and the agitating locals last evening to let the resumption of garbage disposal.



Among other issues, the three parties have agreed to distribute compensation in lieu of the acquisition of 1,500 ropanis of land in Bancharedanda, effectively manage the garbage, search for alternative dumping sites and construct canals by July 4.



Chief of KMC’s Environment Department Rabin Man Shrestha said heaps of garbage piled up in for five days in some of the major areas – Jamal, Baluwatar, Durbar Marg, Bagbazaar, Tirpureshwor, Baneshwor and Airport -- were disposed on Wednesday.
