“Piling garbage on the streets of the capital tarnishes the name and fame of the country across the world,” said Ram Poudel, KMCSA president. “So we decided to resume works though we still support the agitation.”
However, KMC staffers failed to collect garbage. According to Poudel, other organizations prevented them from unlocking offices and collecting garbage. “They even threatened some of our colleagues,” Poudel said. Of the total 2,200 KMC staffers, about 1,600 are affiliated with KMCSA.
Local body employees had resumed their strike on January 21 after three weeks-long suspension. They have vowed not to call off the strike until a three-point deal reached with Ministry of Local Development (MoLD) is not implemented. The cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday is expected to address their demands. “Situation will further worsen if the cabinet disappoints us this time,” said Hari Shreshtha, president of Local Body Employees´ Association (LBEA), one of the agitating organizations.
