Fugitive prisoner Tamang arrested from Babylon disco

KATHMANDU, July 4: Prisoner Rawan Jit Tamang, who was on the run after escaping from Sindhupalchowk district prison, has been arrested from Babylon disco based at Sundhara in the capital on Saturday morning.

A police team from Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Hanumandhoka found Tamang while dancing in the discotheque around at 1 am today.

According to SSP Surendra Khanal, "Tamang escaped from the police control while a group of youths accompanied by him tried to manhandle the police".

Police had to open fire to control Tamang after he ran away, SSP Khanal further informed. Rawan Jit received an injury by his knee in police firing and now he is undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital. Police have also arrested Umesh Shrestha for helping Tamang to escape.

Around 216 prisoners had escaped after the April 25 earthquake badly devastated the district prison.

Police were assigned to investigate into the absconding prisoners after they did not return within the deadline notice issued by district prison management. Tamang, who originally hails from Kavre district, had been serving jail-term after being sentenced to 10 years in prison on the charge of illegal drug-trafficking.
